The Ultimate Guide to Planting and Maintaining a Lawn You’ll Love

While lawn care can seem straightforward, experienced gardeners know that success starts with selecting the right seeds and preparing the environment for lasting growth. Whether you’re rejuvenating tired turf or planting a lawn from scratch, the right knowledge and timing can make all the difference. Evaluate the Space

The first step to planning a new lawn is evaluating your space. Before you select the specific grass seed variety you plan to use, you’ll need to take some time to assess the area.

  1. Determine how much sunlight or shade the area receives each day. This will help you select a grass seed that performs well based upon your lawn’s sunlight exposure.
  2. If you live in a dry region, try a drought-tolerant grass seed such as Oasis Bermuda Grass Seed, a 3-in-1 blend grass seed specially formulated for full-sun, hot, dry conditions.
  3. Understanding the soil’s pH levels will help lead to success. Grass performs best when soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral. Test the soil with a pH kit to determine if it is too acidic or alkaline. If you find that it is too acidic, apply a fast-acting dolomite lime at the rate of 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet; if it is too alkaline, apply a granular gypsum at the rate of 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Choose the Right Seeds for Your Needs

A robust new lawn starts with selecting the right seed. Grass seeds are not “one size fits all”, so it’s key to understand your region’s climate as well as your lawn’s purpose.

1. Cool-season vs. Warm-season Grasses

  • Cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky Bluegrass – Midnight, perform best in cooler climates and cooler regions of the United States.
  • Warm-season grasses prefer warmer climates and thrive in the warm, southern regions of the country. Try Blackjack II Maya Bermuda Grass Seed for a fine-textured, carpet-like, dark green warm-season grass.

2. Consider Your Lifestyle and Lawn’s Purpose

When and How to Seed Your Lawn

After you’ve selected your seed, it’s time to prepare the soil.

The timing for this is key…

  • For cool-season grasses, early fall or mid-spring is the best time to sow seeds.
  • Warm-season grass seeds are best sown in spring, once soil temperatures have reached 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

To prepare your lawn for seeding…

  • Clear the area of any rocks, leaves or other debris.
  • If your ground is very uneven, till the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Tilling will produce new weed growth, so it is recommended to level the ground, water the soil and spray out any new weeds before planting the grass seed.

It is now time to seed your lawn…

  • Apply the seeds at the recommended seeding rate according to the seed package.
  • For best results, use Outsidepride’s OptiGrowth coated seeds. Designed to improve seed uniformity, spreading, and soil contact, OptiGrowth also helps retain moisture and delivers a blend of essential nutrients to support healthy, vigorous growth.

Quick Garden Tip

Broadcasting or drop spreading half of the seed while walking north to south, then repeating the process for the other half while walking east to west. This method ensures even distribution across the area.

Need-to-Know Tips for Lawn Care and Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance are important and can affect the long-term health of your new lawn. Learning and implementing the right techniques for early lawn care will help ensure a successful and thriving lawn.

  1. Freshly planted grass seeds must be kept moist until the grass begins to grow. It is not necessary to cover lawn seeds while planting, but many people choose to cover the seeds to help retain moisture and keep the seeds in place. Use peat moss, fluffy top soil or clean, preferably sterilized, straw and cover the seeds at a maximum of 1/4 inch, or according to the seed package directions. – Coated seeds, such as bermuda, dichondra or Miniclover, should not be covered more than 1/8 inch.
  2.  To keep the seeds moist while they are germinating, it is recommended to water the seeds gently with an oscillating type of sprinkler to prevent the seeds from moving. Watering the area multiple times a day may be necessary to keep the seeds moist. Once the grass begins to grow, you will want to decrease the watering frequency but increase the length of each watering. This will ensure a deep-rooted, vigorous lawn.
  3. Patience is necessary regarding mowing a newly grown lawn. Do not mow the lawn until it is at the recommended height for the specific grass seed type you’ve selected, which typically takes around 3-6 weeks from the time of planting. See the back of your seed packet for details and more information about the recommended growing height. When the lawn has reached the recommended height, follow the 1/3 rule: only mow 1/3 of the blade at a time. The new grass is tender, so a sharp blade is important to prevent any grass blades from being pulled up out of the ground.

A healthy, vibrant lawn starts with the right seed and a solid plan. By selecting a variety suited to your region, preparing your soil carefully, and following through with consistent care, you’ll set the foundation for a lush lawn you can enjoy season after season.
