The Three Sisters of Companion Planting

The Three Sisters of Companion Planting

The Three Sisters: An Ancient Matchmaking Marvel in the Garden

Native Americans were the ultimate matchmakers in the garden, bringing together these three inseparable pals; corn, beans, and squash. It’s like they knew they were destined to be besties from the start. Legend has it, that the Three Sisters even have their own theme song.

The Haudenosaunee, aka the original green thumbs of the Great Lakes, devised this genius planting technique. They created a veggie squad, with corn holding down the fort in the middle, beans playing the supportive sidekick, and squash chilling at the corners like the cool cucumber it is.

And get this: it’s not just about friendship; it’s about teamwork! The corn provides the foundation for the pole beans to climb while the beans are like personal trainers for the corn, helping it stay upright and strong. The squash is the ultimate wingman, keeping the weeds at bay and scaring off any garden pests with its prickly stems.

These three musketeers are not only great pals, but they’re also a power-packed trio of nutrition. Corn brings the carbs, beans bring the protein and squash? Well, squash brings everything else – it’s like the multivitamin of the vegetable world!

Now, planting these buddies isn’t just throwing them together and hoping for the best. There’s a method to the madness. Plant the corn first, give it some time to stretch its legs, then bring in the pole beans for a climbing party, and finally, let the squash join the fun once the party is in full swing.

And hey, if corn isn’t your jam, no worries! You can always swap it out for some giant sunflowers and watch those beans climb to new heights. Just be sure to keep an eye on those sunflowers; they can be a bit territorial with the soil.

So, there you have it folks: the Three Sisters, the ultimate squad goals in the garden. It’s like the original Avengers, but with veggies!

Native Americans had it together with corn, beans and squash! On the Hopi reservation, Third Mesa, I once witnessed them bring on the rain with their rattlesnake dance ceremony. Thank them for the blue corn we now all eat.
